The UK's First
Dual Air Source
Heat Pump System
Rethinking Heat Pump Design
Most air source heat pump systems in the UK rely on a single external unit to provide both space heating and hot water. It’s the standard approach widely installed and accepted across the market.
And while it works, it comes with a fundamental design compromise.
With a single-unit system, the heat pump can only prioritise one demand at a time. When it switches to heat your hot water cylinder, it temporarily diverts capacity away from heating your home.
In milder conditions, this may go unnoticed. But in colder weather or during periods of high hot water demand, the limitations become more apparent.
This can result in:
- Fluctuating room temperatures
- Reduced overall system efficiency
- Oversized radiators and upgraded pipework to compensate
The issue isn’t the technology itself. It’s the way it’s configured. Our configuration leads to better performance.
Priority Hot Water & Heating
Unlike most heat pump systems, and heating systems in general, you either have hot water or heating. With Adlår’s dual heat pump system you always have both.
Constant temperature control
The dual-heat pump system maintains a steady temperature, while smart app control ensures efficient, gradual adjustments instead of large temperature swings.
Cleaner Water
Our cylinders can be equipped with an Electric Anode which neutralised harmful content in your water. We also have optional upgrades to add a salt free water softener.
Outdoor Pump Off in Summer
When you only need hot water, and not heating, your outdoor unit can be turned off, just at the time you are actually likely to be in your garden.
Engineered as a Dual System
Adlår Castra didn’t arrive at dual air source heat pump systems by accident. It is the foundation of how we design, engineer, and install every system.
We pioneered the UK’s first dedicated dual air source heat pump configuration by separating space heating and hot water into two independent units. Each heat pump performs a single role, without compromise or competition for capacity.
The result is greater thermal stability and improved operating efficiency. It delivers performance that remains predictable even during colder weather or periods of high hot water demand.
This isn’t a modification to a standard setup. It is a deliberate engineering decision, built on detailed system modelling, real-world performance data, and an uncompromising approach to design.
Direct to emitters
This removes the need for a low-loss header tank in the system. These tanks see an average heat loss of 3~5%. This means the heat pump can operate at a lower temperature to achieve the same felt temperature as your radiators or underfloor heating.
Smart Heat Curves
Using a combination of outdoor, indoor, and personal preferences our heat pump actively adjusts temperatures automatically, to keep you at a constant temperature, rather than you having to adjust it manually.
Hot Water 50°C 380% Efficiency
In our dual-heat pump system your high temperature hot water is heated from internal air. This allows us to achieve a COP of 380%, an unrivalled level of efficiency in the industry.
Heating SCOP 415~489% Efficiency
With an optimised design flow temperature our heating side can achieve efficiencies over 400%. When the gas-electric factor is ~3x, you can look to achieve a 33% decrease in energy bills if the system is designed right.
Lower losses in the system
By going directly into your emitters and not having 3-port values, and electrically controlled pumps, we reduce system losses by at least 3%~5% compared to traditional boiler setups.
How The Adlår Dual Air Source Heat Pump Works
When comparing types of air source heat pumps, the key distinction is how heating and hot water are produced.
Aurora II — Dedicated Space Heating
The Aurora II is an external air source heat pump engineered exclusively for space heating.
Designed solely to warming your home and never diverts capacity to hot water production, it operates with complete consistency of purpose.
This allows it to:
- Maintain stable, controlled flow temperatures
- Deliver steady performance to radiators and underfloor heating
- Eliminate temperature dips caused by system switching
- Operate with greater efficiency and whisper quiet operation
The result is a home that feels consistently warm with heating performance that remains stable, even in demanding conditions.
Fjord Heat Pump Cylinder — Independent Hot Water
The Fjord is a next-generation hot water cylinder with a fully integrated, dedicated heat pump. Never relying on the external heating unit, it operates independently and is designed specifically to produce domestic hot water with maximum efficiency and minimal system complexity.
How?
- Drawing external air independently via a discreet external vent.
- Heats hot water without diverting capacity from space heating
- Removes the need for complex plumbing connections between external heat pump and cylinder
Because of this, the external heating unit can be switched off entirely during the summer months. Reducing overall energy consumption and eliminating unnecessary outdoor noise.
The result is a cleaner system, improved seasonal efficiency, and hot water performance that never competes with the comfort of your home.
Whisper Quiet
Our ultra-silent quiet technology allows for a whisper quiet operation. The Aurora II 6-, 10- and 14-kW heat pumps all comply with the (EU) No 813/2013 standard regarding outdoor sound power, measured directly next to the heat pump.
Wi-Fi APP Control with Adlar Smart App
Dual-heat pumps, means dual-APP control, allowing you maximum control over your temperatures, settings, and efficiencies.
Smaller Footprint
Our in-line heating setup reduces complexity in the system. This reduces the number of high-failure point parts in the system (such as valves and motors), but also reducing the size needed of large internal equipment.
Electric Anode Filter
Our cylinders can be equipped with an electric anode, which balances the mineral content of your water by filtering out calcium, extraneous particles, chlorine and heavy metals. The result is an almost neutral pH.
Types of Air Source Heat Pumps - What's the Difference?
When comparing types of air source heat pumps, the key distinction is how heating and hot water are produced.
Single Unit Systems
One heat pump does both jobs
Split Systems
External unit + internal cylinder, still shared demand
Dual Air Source Systems
Two heat pumps, two jobs
Only a dual air source heat pump system allows heating and hot water to operate independently — delivering better comfort, efficiency, and control.
How an Air Source Heat Pump System Works
An air source heat pump doesn’t create heat by burning fuel. Instead, it moves heat. Because heat is moved rather than generated, heat pumps can deliver 3–5 units of heat for every unit of electricity used when designed correctly.
